Bo Jarneving - The outbreak of SARS mirrored by bibliometric mapping: Combining bibliographic coupling with the complete link cluster method In
this study a novel method of science mapping is presented which
combines bibliographic coupling, as a measure of document-document
similarity, with an agglomerative hierarchical cluster method. The
focus in this study is on the mapping of so called ‘core documents’, a
concept presented first in 1995 by Glänzel and Czerwon. The
term ‘core document’ denote documents that have a central position in
the research front in terms of many and strong bibliographic coupling
links. The identification and mapping of core documents usually
requires a large multidisciplinary research setting and in this study
the 2003 volume of the Science Citation Index was applied. From this
database, a sub-set of core documents reporting on the outbreak of SARS
in 2002 was chosen for the demonstration of the application of this
mapping method. It was demonstrated that the method, in this case,
successfully identified interpretable research themes and that
iterative clustering on two subsequent levels of cluster agglomeration
may provide with useful and current information. Cuvinte

environment – A study of the environmental scanning at Stockholm
Public Library and the Bookstore Akademibokhandeln
This article is based on a master thesis exploring how a bookstore chain and a public library meet the needs of their customers through environmental scanning in Spring 2007. The empirical material is derived from semi-structured interviews, and the theoretical framework is based on different models used in the process of environmental scanning. The results indicate that the library perceives the environment as society as a whole and all its members as their users, whereas the bookstore concentrates on the sectors of the environment that affect their selling. The consequences of this are that the library is more active in the environment and uses surveys as a basic source for information while the bookstore is more passive and relies on statistics. Library Services. Information Society Mircea Regneală - Bayerische Staatsbibliothek of Munich and the access to its collections The article presents the Bayerische Staatsbibliotek in Munich, the second in Germany as far as its size is concerned, founded in 1558. Besides a series of local duties, this library, together with Deutsche Bibliothek in Frankfurt-am-Main and Staatsbibliothek from Berlin, functions as German national library and it deals with digitizing the materials before 1700. Among its many departments, the manuscripts and rare books one stands out through its impressive collection of incunabula and rare editions printed after 1500. paper, based on a few articles written by specialists from different
European countries, contains an objective analysis of the way the
marketing techniques and instruments are implemented in libraries. In
Europe, we can see that library marketing is present in different
forms; in some countries it is more intense and in others it is less
strong. We will surprisingly discover manifestations of marketing in
unexpected places, in less developed countries, with few financial
possibilities but opened to this domain and oriented towards the users,
and in more developed but traditional countries, marketing techniques
are in an incipient phase. Unfortunately, libraries are a long way
ahead from this perspective.

Agnes Erich - Library 2.0 A New Service Model For Libraries The
utilization of the new information and communication technologies
implies a series of changes concerning the libraries. Currently it is
spoken more and more about a new type of service offered by them,
Library 2.0, which brings in foreground the user who becomes a modeler
of the library services and resources. The information structures
customer is not satisfied anymore by the unidirectional access to the
resources, he wanted to be involved in the evaluation of them, making
comments and sharing his ideas with another user. In this sense the
library managers are looking for more efficient means to deliver
services so that to obtain a proper feedback which enable them to take
the best measures to make profitable them. Library 2.0 can be a
solution for all these problems.

Octavia-Luciana Porumbeanu - Education in
the Information Society This
article approaches the fundamental role which education has in the
information society. The continuous evolution of information and
communication technologies requires that all citizens have the
necessary skills have to use these technologies and to access
information for efficient individual functioning in the information
society. In this context, the information literacy programmes have a
growing importance. Keywords:

Zenovia Niculescu - The Functional Characteristics of the Common Subdivisions from the Dewey System Within the normative architecture of the Dewey system, we
meet the main determination of the common subdivisions which have
specific forms of expressions. The referential values of the common
subdivisions consist in the variety of reflection of different peculiar
aspects of information.

functionality In the
contemporary society, in which the relevant factor is information, it
is essential for both the librarians and the beneficiaries of
documents, to be familiar with the steps necessary in the information
process, the bibliography - with all its forms - having an undeniable
role in the process of knowledge. Thus, the consciousness of the
necessity of information and the fact that the accurate and complete
bibliographic references are at the basis of taking a specialized
decision. Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu (1838-1907) - In Memoriam
The article
points out to B.P. Hasdeu’s special interest in documents and also in
libraries as institutions that shelter manuscripts, varied historical
sources, rare books etc. The European archives and libraries where
Hasdeu conducted his research are mentioned and his most important
printed works based on historical documents are discussed. The
conclusion of the article is that B.P. Hasdeu nourished a true passion
for documents and his scientific activity was indeed „phenomenal, of a
colosal stature”. Hasdeu is indeed „a giant of the Romanian culture”
and „a genius of an overwhelming stature”. Keywords: Archive,

the 4th of April 1884, as Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu was the only
academician expert in linguistics, he commited himself to the Romanian
Academy to write the etymologic dictionary that was to be financially
supported by King Carol I. He conceived a „Linguistic Questionnaire”
that he sent out to all the counties Romanians inhabited and the
answers that he received constituted precious information included in
the first three volumes of the Dictionary. After the death of his
daughter in 1888, Hasdeu was overwhelmed with grief and he slowed down
his scientific work. He felt the call of other horizons and was
concerned with other things. The Romanian Academy discharged him of the
responsibility of the dictionary in 1897. The fourth volume never came
out of print but its ample introduction was issued as a separate book. Keywords:

study is concerned with bringing out into strong relief some unknown
aspects of the personality of the great scientist Hasdeu, aspects which
are to be found only in his correspondence. We were interested in his
correspondence with his little daughter while she was living in Paris
together with her mother. What we found out in these letters is the
roots of a warm and gentle soul which is to be discovered only in the
presence of his family, whom he deeply loved and cared of. Keywords:

Committed husband Ioana-Ruxandra Fruntelată - The Romanian Ethnological Terminology in the Works of B. P. Hasdeu Hasdeu’s polyvalent contribution to the bases of Romanian
ethnology is decisive as he has set up the national ethnological
tradition and the reference point for all the following ethnological
contributions. A list of the ethnological terms used in Hasdeu’s works
reflects at the same time the pioneering ways of the founder of the
Romanian ethnology (he doubles terms or uses terminological variants
for the same object, sometimes he fails to clarify the meaning of some
concepts that he introduces) and his exceptional erudition proved by
the impressive number of data that he assimilates and analyses in order
to build original theories. Hasdeu uses and imposes a series of
specialized terms such as variant,
type, prototype, archetype (with subdivisions like subtype, subvariant, subarchetype),
trying to define and refine the object that was called popular
literature or folklore in the second half of the 19th century.
